Energy Neighbourhoods reduced the Carbon Dioxide emissions of Tipperary households by 2 tonnes per Year!
Motivating Low Carbon Behaviour Change

Welcome to the Irish pages of Energy Neighbourhoods - this website summarises the conservation of energy and savings in money that were made in an IEE project in Ireland.
So what happened?
A total of 34 neighbourhoods from four areas in Tipperary committed to reducing their emissions.
What was the challenge?
Residents in Nenagh, Tipperary, Thurles and Cahir Towns committed to reducing their emissions by 8%.
What was in it for the participants?
Each home got a low energy pack while the winning homes in each town council won €500, €300 and €200 for third, second and first prizes. St.Ailbhes Secondary School conserved the most energy and they also won an all expenses paid trip to the European award ceremony in Brussels together with their neighbours the Monastery School in Tipperary Town. A video of the event can be accessed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBvNX1q-cYk
Any other benefits?
There are many advantages to conserving energy:
- Save money
- Reduce global warming
- Reduce natural resource depletion
- Reduction of the negative health impacts of emissions
What happened?
Of the 34 starting neighbourhoods 15 finished the challenge. A total of 10 of these 15 saved energy with the top four saving over 8% of their domestic energy. The top savings were made by St.Ailbhes Secondary School in Tipperary Town. They saved a staggering 17% of their domestic energy! Well done to Patrick Kennedy and his school staff and students and infact to all the participants. The Monastery School in Tipperary Town and Our Lady of Mercy in Cahir were third and fourth place respectively and saved over 8% of their domestic energy. Cluain Glas, a housing estate in Thurles, saved over 10% of their domestic energy and came in an overall second place.
Its amazing that three of the best four neighbourhoods were schools!
